A 76-year-old Buxton woman, who was struck by a hit-and-run driver at 6:10 a.m. today (Dec. 4) on Long Plains Road, has died in a Portland hospital.

A spokeswoman at Maine Medical Center in Portland said that Ethel Lewis of 743 Long Plains Road (Route 22), passed away at 1:15 p.m. today.

At 4:30 p.m. Monday, the Buxton police said officers had located a maroon 1999 Dodge minivan they believe was involved in the accident. Police said they are questioning the female driver of that van as part of the investigation.

Officer Jason McClure said Lewis, who had a flashlight, was crossing the road to pick up her morning newspaper. The last known direction of the vehicle was on Route 22 towards the intersection of Groveville and Haines Meadow roads in Buxton Center.

Police are asking the public to call 929-6612 with any information.
