This photo of Main Street, left, looking East from Bridge Street, was taken around 1970. Notable in this photo is the Westbrook Congregational Church, which stood on Main Street at Brackett Street since 1834. Hub Furniture Co. was in the old Brackett Block, which was built around 1850 and was once part of the Underground Railroad. Also seen in this photo are Phil’s Pizza, Hood Drug Store and Day’s Jewlrey store, which was located on the corner of Carpenter Street. The Vallee Rexall Drug Store can be seen on the left of the photo. A police officer is visible standing in the middle of the street directing traffic, which was a common sight in old downtown Westbrook. All of the buildings pictured here, with the execption of the building on the left, the former Vallee Drug Store, were demolished during urban renewal.
