With Thanksgiving at hand, turkeys are in the news. A front page picture shows 11 wild turkeys in a field. Growing them is a project of the Windham-Gorham Rod & Gun Club.
The state says no to Gorham’s plans for Village Square traffic. The town wants a single-approach lane on Main Street, and the state wants two. The town wants a 100-foot parking ban, the state wants 200 feet.
A Westbrook City Council majority is threatening to take the city out of the Greater Portland Transit District. “We’re not only subsidizing the transit district, but also the City of Portland,” said Alderman Norman Conley.
Patrolman Ashley found two books on Westbrook’s Main Street – “Police in America” and “Study Guide for Basic Criminal Law.”
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Moore, Nonesuch Road, Gorham, will have as Thanksgiving guests her mother, Mrs. Christine Harris, and daughter, Mrs. Peggy Loiselle, Portland, and Dr. Roy Moore, Windham.
In Westbrook, Mr. and Mrs. James O. Born, Brook Street, will have as Thanksgiving dinner guests daughter Christine, a senior at the University of Maine, Orono, and Mrs. Born’s aunt, Mrs. Frank Ferguson, Falmouth.
Llewellyn Randall complained to the Westbrook City Council that the police never notified him that 60 feet of his fence on Stroudwater Street was down, letting his cattle roam, though they gave a ride to Dunkin’ Donuts to a man who drove his pickup truck through it after leaving a pub. The pickup was left mired in a pasture. Randall said he was holding it “for some answers.” He also said that a Westbrook policeman repeatedly sets traps on his land even after being told not to.

Fred Wescott won re-election as Westbrook’s mayor. It was Wescott (Democrat) 2,766; Robert Smith (Republican) 2,160; Alfred E. Porell (Independent) 466.
Gov. John McKernan proposes to do away with revenue sharing. Windham Town Manager Glenn Fratto says McKernan is unwilling to make the tough decisions.
Standish voted for a general review of the town’s charter.
Sally Gross, 161 Mechanic St., Westbrook, reported the theft of her 18-speed green and silver, 24-inch Huffy mountain bike.
The International Genealogical Consumer Organization has certified Karen L. Sherman of the Walker Memorial Library, Westbrook, as a registered genealogist.
Windham asks people to work for general assistance (welfare) funds. Town Councilor Stuart Neal wants the state to do the same, saving $9 million a year.
Clint Thornton, Main Street, Gorham, is raising a German Shepherd puppy that will be trained to guide the blind.
Westbrook High School’s Sock’n Buskin Club will present Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
Frances Mains, Portland, formerly of Westbrook, was honored at her 90th birthday at a party given by her sons, Eernest, Richard and Kenneth, their spouses and other family members.
