Buxton voters approved a measure 1,968 to 1,146, to rezone part of Buxton Center, allowing School Administrative District 6 to buy land to build a new elementary school.
The town’s selectmen sent the proposal to referendum for the school district. The vote changes an area adjacent to the Hanson-Jewett school complex from rural to a village zone.
SAD 6 hopes to consolidate four existing elementary schools with one that could cost $35 million. Superintendent Suzanne Lukas said recently the state’s education department wanted SAD 6 to select a site this fall.
