Mains’ Pizza, a popular Raymond eatery on Route 302, was destroyed by fire early Thursday morning, Oct. 19.
According to Bruce Tupper, assistant Raymond fire chief, a motorist traveling by the restaurant on Route 302 reported the fire on his cell phone at 4:30 a.m. Just one minute later, two firefighters stationed at the Raymond Public Safety Building, Daniel Hillier and Justin Emmons, were en route to the fire on Engine 1. At 4:33 a.m., the two were at the scene dousing the flames.
Within 15 minutes the fire was out, with the help of four other Raymond apparatus, one Windham engine, and a Casco engine and tanker. Tupper said the fire required only about 500 gallons of water to extinguish.
“It was a quick knockdown,” Tupper said.
Tupper said the fire crews used “a lot of foam” to suppress the fire since “there was a lot of heat” built up in the structure.
According to a statement issued around noon Thursday by the state fire marshal, faulty electrical wiring caused the fire. The fire caught first in the main 33-foot-by-33-foot dining room. The fire spread rapidly throughout the building.
Even though response was immediate and the firefight was brief, the building is not salvageable, Tupper said.
