Zakhuur Diliiza said he isn’t angry anymore the way he was growing up in South Central Los Angeles because he has left his anger and frustration behind him. Now he’s at peace with himself and the universe.
He said he’s learned harmony through spiritual and metaphysical study – lessons he’ll pass on to anyone who needs them and is willing to sacrifice for them. But those lessons don’t come easy.
Diliiza is the owner of Unicorn Cove, a school of metaphysics and new age supply shop that he recently moved to 795 Main St. after six years in Portland. The shop sells aromatherapy herbs, teas, candles, incense and new age music. It also provides a number of services including counseling, marriage ceremonies (Diliiza said he is an ordained reverend) and massage.
Other services offered by Diliiza include telepathic readings, astrological charts, prayer, spellwork (removing negative energy) and paranormal investigation, which Diliiza said is his specialty.
While not everyone is looking for help from a paranormal investigator, some of the people who come to Diliiza are looking for help of a much more practical nature – help getting their lives together. And while Diliiza may hold views held by few others in the mainstream of society, his approach to helping people is decidedly straightforward.
Diliiza said he grew up in South Central Los Angeles and was a witness to the 1992 riots in Los Angeles following the Rodney King beating by police officers. Growing up in that environment, he said he saw a number of people succumb to the stress and violence, falling into the trap of drugs and alcohol. He said he once saw a man shot because of drugs.
“I’ve seen too many people throw their lives away over drugs and alcohol,” he said.
As a result, Diliiza’s approach to life is straight and narrow, despite his unique spiritual beliefs. In fact, the thing he said he stresses the most in his teachings is common sense.
“If you’re in an abusive relationship, don’t go out and find another one,” he said. “If you get arrested over alcohol and drugs, don’t seek out that type of lifestyle.”
Diliiza said he’s got about 60 students in the Greater Portland area, with about 12 of them being his core students. He said he’s also got students all over the country and even in other countries. He said he teaches his students discipline and self-discovery, using meditation, martial arts, tai chi, the natural interests of his students and whatever else he can use to help them get control of their lives. There’s no drinking, no drug use, no getting into trouble – and no quarter given to those who can’t follow those three rules. Physical exercise is a must, as well as meditation.
“Physical fitness is imperative,” he said. “Yes, we’re an American culture, and we’re very lazy. But it doesn’t mean we have to stay that way.”
As far as health, Diliiza doesn’t claim to be a doctor, although he does offer some alternative health services. He said he wouldn’t ever tell a student to get off of a medication. “At all costs, listen to your doctors,” he said.
To be sure, Diliiza holds views some people might find unusual. “Yes, I see ghosts,” he said. He also believes he’s telepathic. But at the same time he says his views are organized. “I teach practicalities,” he said – getting people off drugs, getting into shape, keeping their minds focused and keeping their feet on the ground.
As far as the business, much of it is based on donations rather than fees for services. But Diliiza said it isn’t about the money for him. In fact, he said it’s difficult for him to even be in business because banks don’t consider him a good investment.
“I don’t have a lot of money, and my students don’t have a lot of money,” he said. “I started my business with nothing, and I have a little more than nothing now. But that is for my students.”
But Diliiza doesn’t mind. He said he’s doing what he wants to do. And after living all over the country, he’s now doing it in Westbrook.
