Editor,
The November referendum presents an important challenge for Windham voters. The proposed mineral extraction amendment has several vital “pitfalls.”
It’s unfair because it will apply retroactively even to projects already approved and in operation. It’s an overreaction by one neighborhood that will hurt approved operations and other business all over town.
The proposed referendum prohibits recycling, thus wasting natural resources and creating more expense for everyone. The author of the proposal did not discuss this with the planning board, town councilors, code enforcement, or other gravel pit owners; just one special interest group.
There were no public meetings or citizen input. If our ordinance needs to be amended There is a better way. I urge Windham voters to vote against the referendum.
