Editor,

John Balentine’s view that the historic district in Standish should be repealed (Sept. 29 Whitewashed tombs) overlooks some key points:

1. Citizens initiated and passed a referendum to create a historic district because they, like many others across the state and nation, recognize the aesthetic and economic value of a historic district;

2. Citizens have stated, through the comprehensive plan process, they want a village and not a commercial strip; and,

3. Successful planning practices suggest that one solid foundation to a village is a historic district.

Yes, the historic district ordinance may need to be revisited, but Mr. Balentine’s uneducated opinions discourage the thoughtful discussions that ought to take place.
