Windham 0

Scarborough 4

Buddy Reid scored two goals in the second half to lead Scarborough over Windham in boys’ soccer, 4-0, last week.

The Eagles managed just four shots on goal the entire game as the defending champion Red Storm looked like champions.

Halfway through the first period, Jason Philbrick opened the scoring for the Red Storm. Eddie Jones fed Philbrick from the goalkeeper’s left side across to the left and his shot found the net.

“In the first half we had just one mistake,” said Windham coach Jim O’Connor. “We have to limit the mistakes, every time we play a senior-laden team. If we make a mistake, they capitalize.”

At halftime, Scarborough led the game, 1-0, and had outshot Windham, 10-2.

In the second half, the Red Storm began pulling away. Reid tallied his first goal of the game a quarter of the way through the half. Jones shot from the box and the ball hit the post, Reid was there to put the rebound into the net for a 2-0 lead.

“We’re moving the ball better offensively,” said Scarborough coach Mark Diaz.

Twelve minutes after his first goal, Reid scored again. Streaking down the right side toward the goal, none of the Eagle defenders could catch up to him to get in front of the ball. That goal made it 3-0.

“We changed our defense,” said O’Connor. “I talked to the kids at halftime and I said ‘what’s the difference between losing 1-0 or 5-0? Let’s try it and see what we can do.'”

Unfortunately, changing the defense didn’t work.

With four minutes left to play, Scarborough scored for the fourth and final time. A crossing pass from a Windham player was intercepted by Drew Kirstein and slapped into the goal on a one timer.

Craig Slavin recorded four saves for the shutout.

“I’m happy with the shutout. We’re playing better defensively,” said Diaz. “We’ve still got some things to work on but we’re playing better than we were two weeks ago.”

The win is the fifth of the year for the Red Storm as they improve to 5-0-1. Zach Cantor made 16 saves for the Eagles as they drop to 2-3-1.

“I think it is evident that there’s still room to improve,” said O’Connor. “They worked hard once again.”
