Community thankful for park

After several rained-out weekend celebrations planned by the Gorham Recreation Department in June, officials from the town recently joined with the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Club in thanking Dan Shaw and Jon Shaw of Shaw Brothers Construction for their gift of Shaw Park to the citizens of Gorham.

Cindy Hazelton, director of Gorham Recreation Department, said the Rotarians at the club’s weekly meeting “picnic” at Shaw Park presented Gorham another gift, a canoe storage building located on the shore of the Presumpscot River at Shaw Park.

Hazelton said the Rotary project was completed through a partnership with students from the Westbrook Regional Vocational Center and Rotarians completing the design and construction phases of the building. The building will be used by the Gorham Recreation Department to store canoes and kayaks during their program seasons. Hazelton said the department is in hopes of beginning a family paddle-and-play program in which families can sign up to rent canoes, complete with life jackets and paddles, for excursions on the Presumpscot River. The program would operate out of the new canoe building.

Current plans by the department include evening and weekend rental opportunities as well as instruction programs in the coming spring and summer seasons.

Access to the Presumpscot River at Shaw Park is open dawn to dusk for those wishing to bring their own canoes or kayaks. Shaw Park is located on Partridge Lane off Route 237 in Gorham.
