Tim Caswell has been racing for five years – the first four without a feature win. This year he won seven.
To top it all off he clinched the Road Runner point title Saturday night at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, finishing the season with 797 points to Jamie Heath’s 778.
Caswell led Heath by only one point entering the night’s racing, setting up a scenario where whichever driver finished first in the feature would take home the title.
“I honestly didn’t know what to think,” Caswell said. “I’ve been racing five years and this is the first year I haven’t had any bad luck. I was just hoping my bad luck wasn’t going to kick in tonight.”
Bad luck kicked in, but not for Caswell.
On lap 12 of 25 Heath broke a wheel bearing in turn one, ending his race and season while ensuring Caswell’s title.
Caswell was ahead of Heath on the track at the time of the incident, but half the race was still remaining.
“If there was a caution and I didn’t break the bearing it could have been a different story,” said Heath, who held the point lead from week two until last week.
Heath still finished in the points, just ahead of Kelsey Babb who finished third, two points back.
Caswell had some bad luck of his own at the beginning of the season with two blown motors and a disqualification.
“It’s another case of if you keep picking away at it you are there at the end,” said track owner Andy Cusack.
