Narragansett School celebrating 25th
Faculty and staff at Narragansett School on Main Street are planning events throughout this year for the school’s 25th anniversary.
Principal Brad Smith said an open house is planned on Thursday, Sept 14 from 5:45 to 7 p.m., for parents and children of current Narragansett families. Smith said students would receive a “special” gift with mementoes for teachers, staff and guests. The school’s students will be treated to a special barbeque on Sept. 28.
The elementary school now has kindergarten through second grade, but it opened with 461 students in its first classes for kindergarten through grade 4 on Sept. 8, 1981. Smith said current enrollment is about 450.
Norman Weed was the school’s first principal. Smith is the fourth principal. The school is planning a reception for teachers and staff who were there when the school opened 25 years ago.
Murals on corridor walls by three artists depict Gorham’s history. Another artist, Dahlov Ipcar of Georgetown, was commissioned to paint three murals for the school when it was built. Ipcar is unable to attend the reception next month, but the staff is preparing a video of an interview with the artist.
The school’s anniversary committee, headed by Assistant Principal Polly Brann, is planning events throughout this year. The committee is researching the school’s history and gathering photos. “The staff is proud of it. Narragansett is a great school,” Smith said.
The school’s name reflects the history of the town. Gorham was once known as Narragansett No. 7, which was a land grant from the General Court of Massachusetts in 1733.
