Malcolm A. Bacon, 78

Malcolm A. Bacon, 78, of Naples passed away Aug. 23, 2006, at the Bridgton Health Care Center supported by his family after a long illness.

He was born on Aug. 29, 1928, a son of James and Gladys Chaplin Bacon of Naples. At nine years of age Malcolm started going to work with his father, who operated a large power shovel doing road construction. He was always learning the trade from his father and, after graduating from Bridgton High School in 1947, he was prepared to operate a power shovel by himself. For approximately 24 years Malcolm operated heavy equipment for Lane Construction Company of Meriden, Conn., and 12 years for Santino Viola of Portland. He also ran a small excavating business from his home and was always enthusiastic about his work.

Malcolm much enjoyed hunting in Maine, New England and Canada. In 1986 he realized a long-time desire of going on an African Safari.

He was a Past Master of Oriental Lodge No. 13 AF&AM and a member of Kora Temple Shrine. Malcolm contributed to the Lodge in many ways, among them was doing much of the excavation for the new Lodge Hall in Bridgton. He was Past Patron of Pondicherry Chapter No. 192 Order of the Eastern Star eight times.

He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Louisa Duffus.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Rachel Howard Bacon of Naples; five children, John of Gorham, Malcolm of Freedom, N.H., Mary Reed and husband Arthur of Poland, Patricia Sharkey and husband Jack of Warren, and Justin of Naples; six grandchildren, Matthew and Kelley Reed, Michael and Rachel Feero, and Nathaniel and Jameson Bacon; his sister, Rosalie Bacon Mosher of Gorham; and his brother Erwin of Millinocket.

His funeral was held at the Naples United Methodist Church in Naples Village with Pastor Norman Boulay officiating.

Bruce W. Fickett, 64

Vietnam war veteran

Bruce W. Fickett, 64, of Mechanic Falls died Aug. 18, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. His family was by his side.

He was born in Bridgton on July 18, 1942, the son of Ernest H. and Julia Snow-Fickett. He was educated in Pownal and New Gloucester school systems. Upon graduation from high school he served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. There he worked at company headquarters and went on re-supply missions.

He married the former Deanna E. Duchette on Dec. 2, 1989. He was employed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield until his retirement. He was a member of the Poland Baptist Church where he served as a trustee and a helper with the Giants of Faith Ministry.

He is survived by his wife Deanna Fickett of Mechanic Falls; his sisters, Barbara Bryant of Auburn, Patricia Rogers of New Gloucester, Marilyn and her husband Roger Tripp of New Gloucester, Clara and her husband Dean Neal of New Gloucester; one brother, Roger Fickett and his wife Denise of Sabattus; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and three brothers, David, Donald, and Robert.

Services were held at the Poland Baptist Church. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Mechanic Falls. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home.

Joan Smith Provost, 81

Joan Smith Provost, 81, of Cushing died Aug. 11, 2006, at Pen Bay Medical Center in the presence of her husband and children.

Mrs. Provost was born Oct. 24, 1924, in Providence, R.I., to Constance Holt Smith and Robert H. Smith; she was a direct descendant of Roger Williams, the founding father of Rhode Island. Joan graduated from the Lincoln School for Girls in Providence, and then attended the Rhode Island School of Design until the advent of World War II transformed her goals. She then graduated from The Boston School of Occupational Therapy, and moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

In 1950, Joan married Cornelius William Provost II of New York City; they settled in Saunderstown, R.I., where their three children were born. After Corny became a teacher, she spent many years assisting him by performing an incredible variety of functions including school librarian, dormitory housemother, 75th reunion planner, and travel arranger at different college preparatory schools. Her most beloved function was acting as a substitute mother for students from all over the world; she often invited students to share her home and family life.

Mrs. Provost is survived by her husband of 56 years; her son and daughter-in-law Stephen and Carol Ann of Naples, her son David and his companion Kathy Weymouth of Rockport; and her daughter and son-in-law Cornelia and Don Boglioli, and their three children of Forest Knolls, Calif. In addition she leaves behind her sister and brother-in-law John and Nancy Keay of Philadelphia, Pa. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, devoted friends and former students. She was predeceased by her sister Constance Aubertin of Greenwich, Conn., in 2004.

Grace Young Taisey, 88

Active community member

Grace Y. Taisey, 88, beloved mother and grandmother died peacefully surrounded by her family at Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth, on Aug. 18, 2006,following a long illness.

She was born Jan. 5, 1918, in Twillingate, Newfoundland to the late Bennett and Emma Young. She attended Wheelock College in Boston and graduated in 1940.

Before her marriage Grace taught nursery school in Portland, Ore. On Oct. 24, 1947, she married Richard C. Taisey in Boston, Mass. She lived in Lexington, Mass., until 1956 and then moved to Groton, Mass., before moving to Yarmouth in 1968. In 1984 she moved to South Freeport.

Summers were always spent on Bustins Island, where she loved to garden and enjoy her family. Boating, flower arranging, antiquing, and cooking were her favorite hobbies. Grandma Grace became known as GG to her grandchildren, an endearment that was soon picked up by her friends. Throughout her life Grace was a real homemaker and caretaker, a wonderful mother and grandmother. Words cannot capture how much she will be missed.

Grace was a long-time member of the South Freeport Congregational Church where she served on the Flower Committee and participated in the Women’s Bible Study Group for many years. In addition to her church work Grace served as a member of the Falmouth Garden Club, Landscape Design Critics Council, the Freeport Women’s Group, and the Portland Landmarks Association.

Grace is survived by her four sons, all currently living in Maine, R. Crawford Taisey Jr. and his wife Candy of Freeport, David Y. Taisey of Pownal, Robert

G. Taisey and his wife Leslie of North Yarmouth, and Jonathan B. Taisey and his wife Lynn of Raymond. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, Amanda Edgar and her husband Billy, Rebecca, Jessica Petrie and her husband Kevin, Philip, Gail, Ben, Samantha, and Allie; as well as her twin great-granddaughters Annika and Julia. She also leaves her sister and brother-in-law, Ilene and Bob Nielsen of Kittery Point. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard in 1971; and her granddaughter, Milissa Grace Taisey, in 1984.

A private burial for family will be held at the South Freeport Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth.

Daniel Patrick Taylor, 55

Daniel Patrick Taylor of Cumberland Center passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by those who loved him on Aug. 22, 2006.

Daniel was born Nov. 14, 1950, in Hyannis, Mass., to John Joseph Taylor and Mary Patricia Doane Taylor. He was raised in Harwichport, Mass., and graduated from Harwich High School. He graduated from University of Mass. at Amherst in 1972 with a degree in hotel and restaurant management. He lived in Florida for several years where he sold life and disability insurance. He moved to Maine in 1995 and in 1997, founded Taylor Painting Consultants. Dan so enjoyed his work, as it allowed him to meet new people regularly, a highlight in his daily life. A comment he once made to his son, Ryan, was that he had a goal to meet 10 new people every day. His brother liked to refer to him as a force of nature.

In 2004, Dan was granted Irish citizenship and he enjoyed spending time in Ireland with family and friends. He dabbled in composing music for the piano and loved entertaining company with his little melodies. When feeling melancholy he wrote poetry. Dan was an avid golfer and in 2003 made the Maine Milestones when he had a hole in one at the Woodlands Country Club. He was instrumental in co-coordinating the annual JDRF benefit golf tournament at the Woodlands.

He is survived by his son Ryan Taylor of Quincy, Mass.; his daughter Caitlin Taylor of Windham; his loving companion Kathleen Murrane of Cumberland Center and her sons Colin of New Gloucester; and Brendan of Cumberland Center.

He is also survived by several brothers and sisters; John Taylor of Orleans, Mass.; William Taylor of Yarmouth, and his wife Nancy Thompson; Edward Taylor of Mattapoisette, Mass.; James Taylor of Naples, Fla.; Thomas Taylor and his wife Audrey of Yarmouth, Mass.; Patricia Taylor of Scarborough; Margaret Taylor of Mashpee, Mass.; Judith O’Neil of Harwichport, Mass.; Kathleen Walker of Harwich Mass.; his step-mother, Patricia Lally Taylor of Hull, Mass.; five step-brothers and one step-sister as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts.

He was predeceased by his parents and a sister Mary Therese Taylor and brother Robert Taylor.

The family would like to thank the staff of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston and VNA/Hospice of Maine for their kind and compassionate care over the past several months.

Services were held in Massachusetts.

Muriel R. Wood, 79

Muriel R. Wood, 79, of South Casco passed away peacefully on Aug. 21, 2006, with her family by her side at the Maine Medical Center.

She was born on May 4, 1927, in Falmouth Foreside, the daughter of Ray and Harriett (Jones) Ricker.

Muriel grew up in Falmouth and graduated from Falmouth High School in 1946. She married her childhood sweetheart in July 1948. Muriel suffered many personal hardships in her life but always remained strong for the family she loved with all her heart. She is deeply loved and missed.

Muriel was predeceased by a son, Steven and daughter, Dale. She was also predeceased by her mother, father and three brothers.

She is survived by her husband, Arnold C. Wood of Casco; two daughters, Diane Buckley of Casco and Sherri Wood of Auburn; a son, Martin Wood of Yarmouth; her grandchildren, Tonya and Jeffrey; and her great grandchildren, Jack and Katie; and several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
