This building shown in the above photos has been known over the years as the Benoit Block. The name came from the time when one of the first floor tenants was the A.H. Benoit Clothing Store.
When the photo at left was taken in the 1970’s, the upper floor was occupied by Attorney Robert L. Cram and the law offices of Welch and Welch (Grover Welch and Roger Welch).
The right side of the building on the first floor was occupied by Nutters Department Store. Benoits and Nutters went out of business and the upstairs tenants have also changed over the years.
Current Publishing, the parent company of the American Journal, has recently moved its headquarters to the first floor of the building. And while the address of the American Journal has changed (the latest in several moves around Westbrook over the years), the telephone number remains the same.
