Quints married 50 years
Carol and Arthur Quint of Stroudwater Street recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a 12-day trip to Alaska.
They were married Aug. 25, 1956, in Westbrook and have resided here since 1961.
Their children are David and his family of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; Susan and David Adams and sons, Saco; Laurie Quint, Hampton, Va.; and Bruce and his children, Gorham. Their family offered to help them realize their dream of returning to Alaska in lieu of giving them a party.
The Quints flew to Juneau, where they celebrated Arthur’s birthday at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake. They also visited Glacier Gardens, where they rode a golf cart 580 feet up into the rain forest. The next day they boarded the Empress of the North, a 230-passenger sternwheeler operated by the American West Steamboat Co., for a week-long cruise.
Their excursions included a ride on the White Pass and Yukon Railroad in Skagway, a day-long cruise on a catamaran into Glacier Bay, as well as stops at Sitke, Petersburg, Wrangell and Ketchikan. During the cruise, the boat often stopped while whales frolicked nearby. They also saw hundreds of seals that dotted the icebergs near the glaciers,, along with bald eagles, a brown bear, a black bear, mountain goats and sea lions.
The last day of the cruise was the highlight of the trip as the boat cruised through LeConte Bay, Fredrick Sound and Tracy Arm before reaching South Sawyer Glacier.
The couple stood at the rail for more than an hour bundled against the 48 degree-temperature as the boat crept slowly and carefully among the icebergs to make its way to the shimmering blue glacier.
