In an October, 1996 flood, the Colley Wright Brook rose to a height which washed out many bridges along its path, including this one on Chute Road. In 1997, a huge culvert which had been installed to take care of the water flow buckled and had to be replaced. The original structure was made from granite slabs quarried not too far from the bridge and first washed out in 1954 during a hurricane. When the town rebuilt the bridge, they also tarred the road for the first time. The part of the granite which was left when the bridge was rebuilt in 1954, washed away in 1996. The brook was named for one of the original landowners in Windham, however he never settled here. Photo and information from Windham Historical Society.
