Page Beecher came into the summer hoping to defend the Peaks to Portland Swim title he’d won each of the past two years, but the weather gods intervened.
Fog blanketed Casco Bay on July 22 and the event was moved back a week, which conflicted with Beecher’s plans to compete with his swim club at an important meet.
“I was pumped and ready to go for the Peaks,” said the 19-year-old from Scarborough. “I was definitely disappointed, but I had made a commitment.”
Beecher competed in a number of events at the Maine State Summer Combined Championships and his team, Coastal Maine Aquatics, took first in both the male and female sides of the meet, which was held in Saint John, New Brunswick, because the Pine Tree State lacks an Olympic-size pool.
“It was a great meet,” said Beecher, who finished in the top three in each of the six individual events he competed in and was part of three first-place relay teams. “I made the right decision.”
Beecher will start his junior year this fall at Alfred University, where he was named MVP of the men’s swim team last season.
