Local schools will be well represented Friday, when the 17th Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic will be played at Biddeford’s Waterhouse Field.

The game features East-West all-star squads chosen from this year’s graduates, with 100% of the net proceeds being donated to the Shriners Hospitals.

For some players, like Westbrook defensive lineman Anthony Dahms, it will be their last time taking the field.

“That’s exciting for me,” Dahms said. “That I get one more one more game, but you also have to look at what it’s about and who it’s for. It’s a good cause.”

To participate, each player is required to raise a minimum of $300 through sponsors and the sale of advertising, something that hasn’t been a problem in recent years.

Kate Hansen, office manager at the Kora Shrine Center, which organizes the event, says players and cheerleaders do an excellent job with the fundraising. She added that in the past few years they’ve gone above and beyond the requirements.

Having watched former Westbrook players, such as last year’s representative Steve Burton, play in the Lobster Bowl, Dahms has long anticipated being a part of the game. He’s looking forward to seeing some of the best football players in Maine on his sideline, as well as on the opposite one.

The West team has historically dominated the game, owning a 14-2 record over the East.

Quarterback Mike O’Donnell and offensive lineman Brett Cartwright of Bonny Eagle, and Gorham offensive lineman Andy Hager, will join Dahms on the West squad.

Also on the West sideline will be Bonny Eagle cheerleaders Aimee Budzko, Felicia Fox, Melissa Keniston and Brittany Wishart.
