What is your position with the city and how long have you been on the job?
I am the assistant library director and reference librarian at the Walker Memorial Library. This is my fourth week on the job.
What is your background? Where did you go to school?
I have worked in public libraries for seven years. Before that, I was a high school English teacher. I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin and my Masters of library and information science from the University of South Carolina.
What kind of duties does your job entail?
I am the library’s reference librarian, which means I am responsible for helping people find information that they need. I am also responsible for selecting library materials intended for adult library users. I have some administrative responsibilities, and I will be working to create library programs for adults.
What is the most likely way that your job causes you to interact with the general public?
My job is primarily a public service position. I staff the library’s reference desk, so I interact with the public often.
What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy working with the public. One aspect of public librarianship that I am very interested in is information literacy, so I enjoy helping people find answers to questions that they may have.
What do you like to do outside of work?
My wife and I bought a house five years ago. That still takes a lot of our time. I enjoy some of the great restaurants in the area, I enjoy reading, of course, and I casually enjoy the Maine outdoors.
