Family and friends of a Buxton man, who died last year, will meet Friday, Aug. 4, in Belgrade Lakes to share memories and create new ones while benefiting his children left behind.
Paul Haug, leaving a widow and three children, died unexpectedly at 46 last October. “We miss him beyond words,” said his wife, Norma Haug. “Paul had a great love of the family, a real family man.”
The Paul Haug Memorial Golf Outing Friday, Aug. 4, in Belgrade Lakes is a fundraiser for the children, Gunter Haug, 6, and twin girls, Grace and Natalie Haug, 3. Norma Haug, a state social worker, has a fulltime job. She’s coping with the day-by-day commitments she now faces as a single mom although being alone is difficult. “We were a team,” she said.
She is concerned about the future for their three children and the outing is a fundraiser for their education. “We don’t need it to live on,” she said.
Golf tees off at noon at the Belgrade Lakes Golf Course followed by a reception at the Village Inn Restaurant. Golf and the gathering afterwards is $125 while it’s $25 for those who attend only the gathering.
Norma Haug met her husband at the University of Maine at Orono where he was a pre-med student. “A bright guy,” she said. “He was handsome.”
Her husband had a “great” sense of humor and loved Bob Dylan’s music. He played the guitar and had a drum set.
He enjoyed the water, but now his ski boat is for sale. “He loved boats, that was his passion,” she said.
Both were from Belgrade Lakes, and they shared a mutual love of waterskiing. “He was an awesome water skier,” she said.
And she plans to teach their children. “They’ll all be skiers,” she said.
Norma Haug said her husband was dedicated to his family and had a close relationship with his son, Gunter. “He misses him badly,” she said.
The family has a lot of good memories that they share. “We talk about him every day like he’s here – not gone,” she said.
The couple moved to Buxton in 1998. She praised her neighbors, who have extended a helping hand through the difficult times of the past year. “I’ve met some nice people in Buxton,” she said. “The neighbors have rallied behind me.”
His wife remembered him easy to get along with and a “good” neighbor, always willing to help. “He could fix anything,” she said. “A get it done kind of guy.”
Repairing things was a natural for Paul Haug, a builder who owned a business with partner Mike Muehle of Gorham. They employed two workers.
This week, Norma Haug has been visiting with her husband’s mother and father, Ben and Winnie Haug of Florida, at their camp in her hometown. Ben Haug said his son was “the light of my life.”
Norma Haug said the fundraiser would get family and friends together. “He’d want people to have fun and enjoy themselves,” she said.
