Dickens bowing out in Buxton

The great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens will take his final bow in the United States this weekend following three performances in Buxton.

Part of the Buxton Community Day celebration, Gerald Dickens, 42, of Great Britain will present his one-man show “A Sentimental Journey with Dickens” at Tory Hill Church at the intersection of routes 202 and 112. His performances in Buxton will conclude his coast-to-coast tour over the past 10 years in the United States.

Dickens opens with “Mr. Dickens is Coming” at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 21. The show is about the life and literary career of his famous ancestor.

Then he’ll have two shows on Saturday, July 22, with “A Child’s Journey with Dickens” at 2 p.m. The matinee is a tribute to Kate Douglas Wiggin, the children’s’ author who had lifelong ties to Buxton’s Tory Hill and Hollis. Wiggin had met Charles Dickens, her childhood hero.

As a finale, Dickens performs “A Christmas Carol” at 7 p.m. on Saturday. He’ll portray the famous characters Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and Bob Cratchit, who were brought to life by Charles Dickens in his classic.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Dorcas Society, the Buxton-Hollis Historical Society, the Salmon Falls Library, the Tory Hill Church Building Restoration fund and the South Buxton Cemetery fund.

The first-term lawmaker missed few of the 584 roll call votes held in the House of Representatives during the 122nd Maine Legislature. Marean represents Hollis and part of Buxton.

“Having been elected to this office, I consider it a basic duty to be present in the House chamber when votes are cast,” said Marean. “It is an honor and privilege to serve, and I owe it to my constituents to be their voice in Augusta.”

“The economy is obviously one of the most critical issues facing our state,” he added. “Our state and local tax burden is the highest in the nation, which profoundly dampens business startups and business activity in Maine. That translates into low incomes and a lack of economic opportunity, which is the reason so many of our young people leave to seek careers in other states.”

Marean serves on the Legislature’s joint standing committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.
