I am writing on behalf our Cub Scout Pack 85 from the White Rock, Little Falls and North Gorham area, to publicly thank the anonymous donor who attended a fund- raiser car wash that we held at the North Windham Wal-Mart at the end of April.

Wal-Mart was helping with some matching funds. The pack was raising funds to help the Cub Scouts attend a spring outing in May. To our surprise, we discovered some larger bills rolled up in some $1 bills that were used as a donation for washing a car. At the end of the event, the scoutmaster, James Lockman, immediately went to the service desk at Wal-Mart to verify totals with the manager and to see if anyone had reported losing or misplacing some money.

They recalled an elderly lady who had changed some money into larger bills and commenting on “coming into some money” and wanting to give some to a good cause.

After describing what we found, the Wal-Mart staff was confident that this person had intended to leave the money with us. The unknown benefactor left a generous donation of $500 and we would like to thank that person for their generosity and let them know that they helped pay for 16 young Cub Scouts to attend an educational program at the Chewonki Foundation in Wiscasset. It was an overnighter and the scouts stayed in yurts, experienced night hiking, learned about renewable energy, saw wild animals, visited a working farm and more.

We would like to thank Wal-Mart for allowing us to hold the car wash and would like to express our gratitude to the kindness of the “unknown benefactor” and the positive experience that it showed those young boys. Scouting is all about learning and values and the boys learned something valuable on that day-sharing and giving, without anything in return.
