Gowen on dean’s list

Tyler J. Gowen has been named to the dean’s list for the second semester at the University of New England in Biddeford.

Tyler, who is majoring in medical biology, is the son of Bruce and Mary Gowen.

Burnheimer excels in academics

John Burnheimer has been named to the dean’s list at Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., for outstanding academic achievement for the spring semester.

Burnheimer is a freshman majoring in managerial economics.

Piffath graduates college

Taylor A. Piffath graduated from Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt., in May.

She is the daughter of Frank Piffath of Gorham and Susan Piffath of Portland.

Piffath, a psychology major, was also named to the dean’s list for the spring semester.

Annual “Kids Karnival” at church

The Portland Faith Center is sponsoring its annual “Kids Karnival” from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, on at its church on New Portland Road.

The event will feature a Hawaiian luau with entertainer Rick Charette in addition to a motorcycle stunt show. Other activities include pony rides, face painting, rock climbing and water slide.

Sunday, June 25, will be the rain date.

Johnson to display artwork

The artwork of a former Gorham woman will be featured in a display next month at Geno’s on Congress Street in Portland.

Cheryl Johnson will have several art pieces highlighted at Geno’s throughout July. Johnson grew up in Little Falls, but has lived in Bridgton for 23 years. She attended the Little Falls Elementary School and graduated from Gorham High School in 1973.

Work by Johnson, who graduated from Maine College of Art in 2000, includes art for puzzles and greeting cards in addition to pencil drawings and oil and acrylic paintings. She provides designs for puzzles, which are marketed worldwide.

Johnson plans to publish her own children’s book that she has written and illustrated.

Baxter Museum open for tours

The Baxter Museum, located adjacent to the library at 67 South St., Gorham, has reopened to the public this summer.

The childhood home of James Phinney Baxter houses Baxter family memorabilia and other artifacts of Gorham history in addition to the perennial garden tended by the Gorham Garden Club.

The house will be open 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in June, July and August. Tours are also available by appointment. For more information, call Linda at 839-3878.
