New Libby-Mitchell American Legion Post 76 baseball coach Mike Coutts has announced his 2006 76er team – half Scarborough players and half from other schools – and promises the summer season will help kick start Scarborough youth baseball at all levels for the future.
“I think we have put together a pretty good club,” said Coutts, heading into his first season as head coach of the multi-town team, headquartered in Scarborough. “We have a good nucleus of Scarborough kids, some of them pretty young, and a bunch of guys from other schools I am told are pretty good ballplayers. I am looking to have a very good summer. I want kids at every level in Scarborough to follow our team.”
Coutts announced the roster Monday, after conferring with assistant coach Chuck Nadeau and discussing the 23 players out for 18 positions. The Libby-Mitchell team, which includes boys ages 15 to 19, draws this year from Scarborough, Buxton and Windham. Players cut or released from other Legion teams are also eligible.

“That’s a pretty good group,” Coutts said. “A lot of kids who can pitch. You need a lot of pitching over the summer. If we can hit the ball and have a good run in the playoffs, all those arms will help.”
Coutts was an assistant coach at UMO for a decade, and has also coached in two nationally known summer leagues in Cape Cod and Alaska. Nadeau was a standout high school and Legion baseball player at Bangor High in the 1980s. He went on to the University of Maine, and later coached Windham High School for five years.
The team will have a few practices to get ready for opening day, which is scheduled for Tuesday against Cumberland.
