The Brown Street School in the photo at left was built in 1886 with two classrooms on the first floor and one classroom on an upper level.
The building continued to serve as an elementary school until a spectacular fire of undetermined origin destroyed it on Sunday, March 23, 1958.
The Westbrook School Department temporarily relocated the 73 pupils and their teachers to the Bridge Street School.
The Brown Street School was eventually demolished and never rebuilt. Harmon’s and Barton’s Florists now occupies of the old school at 117 Brown St.
