The Presumpscot River used to be a very beautiful place full of life and crystal clear waters. Over the years, this amazing place became dirtier and dirtier. It was filled with clumps of unidentifiable floating objects and some identifiable objects, such as bikes, tires, shopping carts, and numerous other items that were purposefully thrown into the river. The Presumpscot River is much cleaner today. This river now has life in it. We can improve the habitats more than we already have and, in the process, make Maine a better place.

Twenty years ago, you wouldn’t want to stick a finger in the Presumpscot. The air and water were toxic and smelled so awful that few people wanted to live nearby. No one wanted to use the river for recreation. We are changing these horrible conditions to make the river more enjoyable for everyone in Maine. We have come a long way over the years, but we can do more.

Everyone should take a little time to do his or her part. You can find a trash can instead of throwing the trash on the ground. You can use environmentally friendly or less fertilizer. You should help clean up oil spills, and you should dispose of household chemicals safely. Eventually, the river will be a cleaner and more enjoyable place. Be wise and don’t forget; every little bit helps!
