Having failed to convince the town to provide for a library, the Windham Center Circulating Library Association, Inc., a group of residents who liked to read and kept the books they loaned in association members’ houses, bought this building in 1907 and put up a sign and a library was born! Keep in mind the building was already nearly 100 years old and set opposite modern-day Corsetti’s Market for about 150 years.

First it was used as a shoe shop, later partitioned into two rooms and rented to a married couple, and for awhile it was a storage building. In March 1972, the town bought the building for $75 and it was moved adjacent to the new public library. Next it was used by the Windham Health Council until 2003 when it was moved again perhaps the fourth move in its long history.

Now it sits beside the Windham Historical Society and is undergoing renovation so it can be used once again to store books and library-associated materials and used as another historic place for children and adults to visit. The Historical Society is seeking the sign, which can be seen over the door. It seems to have been lost in the many moves! Courtesy photo of Windham Historical Society
