Shaw Park grand opening Saturday

A daylong slate of activities is planned as Gorham opens Shaw Park on Partridge Lane, off Route 237, on Saturday, June 3.

The town of Gorham will make a presentation to Shaw Brothers Construction at 10 a.m. during a ribbon cutting ceremony. Danny and Jon Shaw gave the $1 million park, which includes shore frontage on the Presumpscot River, ball fields and a parking lot, to the town.

Gorham Trails is sponsoring a narrative trail walk at 8 a.m. through the historic Gambo gunpowder mills area. The walk will start on the Windham side of the Gambo Bridge.

At 9 a.m., a Mountain Division Trail 5K plus 1,000-foot race will start at the Otter Ponds in Standish and end at Shaw Park. The race is organized by Standish Recreation Department, which will provide a shuttle to return race participants to the Otter Ponds area. Boy Scout troops 817 and 73 are coordinating “Family Paddle and Play” at 10:15 a.m. on the Presumpscot River. For those families who don’t have canoes or kayaks, they will be available on a first come-first serve basis at the park.

There will be youth baseball at Shaw Park field beginning at 8 a.m. with minor league games between Amato’s and Kerwin’s followed by Pogo vs. All State at 10 p.m. Three games featuring Cal Ripkin League teams will play in the afternoon. At 1 p.m., it’ll be Shaw Brothers vs. Moody’s Collision Center; 3 p.m., Lions vs. Cook’s Hardware; and 5 p.m., Phinney Lumber vs. Nicely’s.

The snack shack will open at 8 a.m. and close following the last inning of baseball.

Historians plan heritage dinner

The Gorham Historical Society will have its annual heritage dinner at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 12, at North Street Church on Fort Hill Road.

Alice Keddy said members would take potluck dishes made from “famous” recipes handed down in their families. She said they would share the recipes and asked members to gather at 5:30 p.m.

Ecumenical Commission to dine

The Gorham Ecumenical Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, at School Street Methodist Church for a potluck dinner.

It will mark the last meeting for the commission until September.

Schwartz honored at State House

Ouida Schwartz, a resident of Gorham House, is a recent recipient of the Remember ME Award.

The Maine Health Care Association gave Schwartz the award at the State House for her lifetime of service to others in her community and state.

Gorham students tour capital

Fourth grade students from the Village Elementary School in Gorham visited the Maine State House and Maine State Museum on May 23.

While in Augusta, they met with Gorham’s legislative delegation, Rep. Chris Barstow, Rep. David Farrington and Sen. Philip Bartlett.

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Wednesday, May 24, that the U.S. public debt was $8,349,184,789,572.29
