Traveling natural history program at Jewett

The Frank Jewett Elementary second grades recently had a great learning experience from Chewonki’s Traveling Natural History program.

Chewonki’s lessons have been created to help people of all ages and backgrounds discover and explore the lives of plants and animals that live in the world around them.

The students at Frank Jewett got a lesson in “Fur, Feathers and Feet,” which is an introduction to birds and mammals. The program teaches the differences and similarities between birds and mammals. The classes got an active learning lesson by dressing two students in black bear and bird costumes.

Participants handled beak, foot, and feather specimens to provide a close look at each animal’s special features.

The second graders also learned how to classify animals by their characteristics such as their teeth and claws. They learned that all mammals have things in common such as live births and warm
