The Southern Maine Chapter of the American Red Cross has begun preliminary assessments of the damage caused by record-setting flooding as 500 homes are evacuated in York County.
Major damage is expected to be found in the homes and the cost of the relief effort will rise as flood waters subside.
The American Red Cross of Southern Maine is anticipating an immense clean up and relief effort and expects that flood victims will need food and shelter for an extended period of time.
Approximately 2,000 people evacuated their homes and may not be able to return for two or three weeks. About 80 percent of flooded property was on private wells, which may be contaminated.
The average cost of disaster relief for a family of four is $1,000; that cost being higher for those with special or medical needs.
The American Red Cross of Southern Maine will continue to provide vital disaster assistance for all who need it. All American Red Cross disaster relief is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from citizens and businesses in southern Maine communities. You can help the victims of this flood by making a financial gift to our local Chapter.
