The Scarborough boys tennis team got back to work Monday night after missing a match due to rain.
Coach Craig McDonald’s boys were riding the momentum of two straight wins and were looking for three in a row against Deering. The Rams proved too much for the Red Storm, though, winning the match 4-1.
In the number one match Neall Oliver defeated Mike Leary 8-2 to get things rolling for the Rams.
“He’s really good,” said Leary. “I felt like we were pretty even but his serve was difficult to handle.”
The match was closer than the 8-2 score as both players swapped hard shots and tried to keep each other off balance.
In number two singles, things were pretty even but Deering’s Scott Snyder fought off Alex Hennings 8-4.
“We were neck and neck the whole game,” said Hennings. “I was up but I let him get me.”
Now forced to win the remaining singles match and the two doubles games, the Red Storm dug deep.
Pierre Soubrier won his match 8-4 to give Scarborough a lift as the two doubles matches continued.
Both of those matches were very close as the Red Storm players battled back from early deficits. Each of the doubles games was sent into a tie-breaker.
The team of Jason Barriault ad Mike Billingslea proved to be too much for the duo Prescott and Gove as they won the tie-breaker 10-6 to take the match 9-8. Gove and Prescott fought hard the whole game to force the tie-breaker but fell short. That win gave Deering three match wins and clinched the meet for them.
Chris Packhem and Ethan McElwain found themselves playing from behind in their doubles match as well. And like their teammates, they were able to force a tie-breaker. But they were bested in the tie-breaker 10-7 and defeated 9-8 by the tandem of Miller and Pickering.
The loss snaps Scarborough’s two-match winning streak and drops them to 3-4 on the year. But they get right back in the saddle again with two more matches this week against a 1-4 Gorham team and 2-4 Portland.
