A Pennsylvania-based company has signed an agreement to operate the 11 Maine nursing and residential health care homes owned by Sandy River Health System.
This agreement between Genesis HealthCare of Kennett Square, Pa., includes all of Sandy River’s Maine operations, including Springbrook in Westbrook and Pine Point in Scarborough.
Springbrook is a nursing home that also offers rehabilitation services. Pine Point is an assisted-living and a nursing home, and it too has a rehabilitation center.
The agreement, which was announced on May 10, calls for Genesis to take over operations of all the health care facilities, with Sandy River retaining ownership of the buildings and the land, according to Chip Cooper, vice president of operations for Sandy River.
While Sandy River will no longer be managing its nursing centers and assisted living residences, Cooper said, the company will be retaining ownership of the land, and will still be looking to continue development. “The land is not part of the deal,” Cooper said.
Cooper said Sandy River still plans on moving forward with an assisted-living retirement community on land it recently acquired from the Animal Refuge League. The City Council approved the zone change necessary for the retirement community on Feb. 6. “We will continue to develop that as planned,” he said.
While the buildings may be under new management, Cooper said he didn’t anticipate the staff and the residents and their families would be overly affected by the change. “I don’t really anticipate any impact on the facilities,” he said. “We thought it was the right time, and Genesis was the right company to sell to. They have a similar philosophy to ours.”
