Virginia Wilder Cross was named “Business Person of the Year” at the Gorham Business and Civic Exchange’s annual May reception on May 9.
Cross teaches technical writing at the University of Southern Maine, and has a consulting business.
Exchange President Trish Moulton, listed the attributes that won Cross, a former executive director of the exchange, the award. “Nominees must be involved in the community, Ginny is so involved, sometimes she might wish she wasn’t,” she said “Within the Exchange, she’s empowered others to become involved, serve as officers and directors on the board. The events, she’s organized, the Marketplace, Burn off the Turkey Race, Gorham Gala, and Golf Scramble, donate thousands of dollars to the community each year and bring people together.
In addition, Moulton said Cross was heavily involved in the community. “She sings in the choir and serves on the stewardship committee of First Parish Congregational Church, she’s on the Gorham Recreation Department’s board of directors and she was the first publisher of the Gorham Times newspaper.”
Moulton also surprised Cross with another tribute. She said in honor of her contributions and commitment to education, the exchange will be naming the scholarships it gives out annually to Gorham High School students, the Ginny Cross Scholarships.
