Cormier’s best birthday

Pat Cormier celebrated her birthday on St. Patrick’s Day with family and friends at Captain Newick’s Seafood restaurant in South Portland.

Celebrating with her were her Nana, Rita Minervino, Jackie Richards, Sue Sargent, Rita Edwards, Freddy Forty and Joe and Charlene Nappi.

As part of her birthday celebration, Cormier left for Florida the following day with Joe and Charlene Nappi. They stayed for a week, visiting Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney-MGM Studios, Animal Kingdom, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and Busch Gardens.

They stayed in the Westgate Villas in Orlando. “This was the best vacation birthday I ever had,” Cormier said.

Seeds of Peace benefit

A perennial sale will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, at Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, May 20, at 810 Main St.

The sale is a benefit for Seeds of Peace. All plants $5 and under.

Blanchard in pulpit

Rev. Judith Blanchard will speak at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 21, at the Universalist Church of Westbrook, 719 Main St.

ATV raffle to benefit kids

A drawing for an ATV with a retail value of $899 will be held on June 6 to benefit the Westbrook Kiwanis effort to help local children.

Chopin Club elects officers

The Chopin Club elected its officers at their annual meeting and banquet on May 9 in the Culinary Arts Center at Westbrook Regional Vocational Center.

Louise Leighton was elected president; Norma Hall, vice president; Kathy Mariano, recording secretary; Marian Rich, treasurer; Marjorie Cutter, corresponding secretary; and Jan Usher, historian.

Other members who attended were outgoing president Mary Levesque, Martha Day, Junie Dugas, Janice Beattie, Eva Hansen, Polly Hodgkins, Muriel Johnson, Elba Parr, Jackie Skvorak, Ruth Stokes and honorary member Lora Coffin.

The club’s program committee will make plans this summer for the upcoming 88th season.

Loven awarded scholarship

Hannah Loven recently received a scholarship for $1,000 at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Loven is a senior majoring in elementary and secondary education. She is the daughter of Paul Loven and the late Linda Loven.

An indoor school picnic

The students at Canal School enjoyed Picnic Day on a rainy day in April.

The day was sponsored by the student council and the food services department. The children sat on the floor on checkered tablecloths and ate their lunch. They had their choice of fried chicken, egg salad or ham and cheese. The student council members helped serve lunch.

“It was quite a hit,” said Sandy Beesley, technology integrator for grades three through five.

Parade registration reminder

Those who wish to participate in the Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 29, should call Bob Barton of the Stephen W. Manchester Post 62 of the American Legion at 854-2961.

The parade will form up at 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of New Gorham Road and Longfellow Street.

Benefit spaghetti dinner, silent auction

The New England Blind Athletic Association is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner and silent auction on Friday, May 19, at Westbrook Memorial Post 197 of the American Legion on Route 25.

The dinner, which includes salad, bread, dessert and beverage, will be 5 to 7 p.m. Cost, $5.

The auction, which includes Sea Dog sky box tickets, sports memorabilia and dinner gift certificate, will be 7 to 8 p.m.
