Windham’s Province Fort was completed 262 years ago in May of 1744. It was located near the Parson Smith House. It was demolished in 1782. During the time when settlers feared attack from Native Americans, it was used as a place of refuge. The First Congregational Church services were held here until 1768 and from 1762 until it was taken down, it served as Windham Town Hall. People lived in the fort for awhile, babies were born here and school was taught. Nothing remains of this old useful structure, but a sign marks the approximate location.
