Jim has lost his job. Mary just came home from the hospital and can’t go back to work for a month. Aunt Sarah’s income is “fixed” and she has just paid the winter oil bill. Each of them could use a little temporary help.
In Windham, the food pantry is available “to help people get over that hump; we want to be there for our neighbors when they need us,” said Marge Govoni, chair of the Human Services Committee which oversees the pantry. But donations to the food pantry have dropped off in recent months.
When Sheri Huff, co-owner of Lee’s Family Trailer Sales & Service, learned that food pantry donations had decreased at the same time the need had increased, she decided to kick off what is hoped to be a big shot in the arm for the pantry.
On Friday, May 19, from 4 to 7 p.m., a free cookout and food drive will be held at Lee’s Family Trailer Sales & Service on Route 302. The public is invited to attend and bring donations of non-perishable food, canned goods and paper products. Members of the Human Services Committee will be on hand to provide more information about services that this all-volunteer committee provides.
