Patenaude, Lebeda engaged

Dena Marie Patenaude and John Joseph Lebeda are delighted to announce their engagement.

Patenaude graduated from Husson College and is employed by the Maine Department of Labor.

Lebeda is a self-employed home builder.

They currently reside in Westbrook and plan a wedding in August this year.

Museum passes at Walker Library

The Walker Memorial Library has family passes to a variety of area museums available to residents. The library has passes to the Children’s Museum, paid for by Rowe Ford; the Maine Wildlife Park, courtesy of John Roberts of Disability RMS and the Portland Museum of Art, paid for by the friends of the Walker Memorial Library.

Residents interested in the passes should call 854-0630 to reserve them.

The library also holds story hours for children. They are every Tuesday and Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m.

Legion to meet

Westbrook Memorial Post 197 will hold its last meeting before summer break at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16.

“This will be a very important meeting and all members are urged to attend,” said David Martin, post commander.

The agenda will include second reading and voting on suggested changes to the by-laws as well as election of executive board members and delegates to the state convention on June 17 and 18 in Bangor.

Prior to the meeting, a chicken stew dinner will be held at 5 p.m. for legionnaires and auxiliary members attending their respective meetings, Martin said.

197 elects officers

In elections on April 18, Westbrook Memorial Post 197 elected its slate of officers for the 2006-2007 fiscal year.

They are David F. Martin, post commander; Rodolph Poitras, 1st vice commander; Charles Staples, 2nd vice commander; Nancy Dacar, adjutant; Dennis Axelson, finance officer; and Roger Larrivee, sergeant-at-arms.

The auxiliary elected Beverly Preston, president; Lois Doughty, 1st vice president; Dayle Pennell, secretary; Linda Davis, treasurer; Pat Hinkley, chaplain; and Delores Bailey, sergeant-at-arms.

For the Sons of the American Legion, Harold Lane was elected commander; Donald Afthim, 1st vice commander; Rick Davis, 2nd vice commander; Greg MacDowell, adjutant and finance officer; Fred Reny, chaplain; and Dale Andrews, sergeant-at-arms.

Installation of officers will be held in conjunction with Past Commanders/Presidents Recognition Day on May 21 at the post.

Mailhots to entertain seniors

Phil and Jane Mailhot will entertain the Westbrook Senior Citizens when they meet at noon on Monday, May 15, in Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St.

The program will follow a meatloaf dinner.

The group is planning a trip on June 12 to see Jim Nabors perform at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.

There’ll be something for everyone at the indoor yard sale 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, at Mill Brook Estates, 300 East Bridge St.

Phythian Sisters yard sale

Westbrook’s Phythian Sisters will hold an indoor-outdoor yard sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 13 and 14 at 145 New Gorham Road.

Trinity sponsoring supper

Trinity Lutheran Church is sponsoring a bean supper 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, at North Scarborough Grange on County Road in Scarborough.

Proceeds from the bean supper will benefit three community programs. The three are the Preble Street Resource Center, Center for Grieving Children, and the Long Creek Development Chaplaincy Fund.

Brenda Orach, social ministry chairperson for the church, said matching money up to $1,000 would be available from the local chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, a Fortune 500 member that helps nearly three million members achieve their financial goals and gives back to their congregations and communities.

Orach said the benefit supper is a “Care Abounds in Community” project and Trinity is providing the workers and the homemade pies. Tickets are $6 and $3 for children and are available at the door. For more information, call 854-5653 and leave a message.

Talent show to benefit Meals on Wheels

The Westbrook/Gorham Meals on Wheels program is having a community talent show on Saturday, May 20, at 1:30 p.m. at Westbrook High School.

Tickets are $7 general admission; $5 for students and seniors.

This fundraiser is for the Southern Maine Agency on Aging Meals on Wheels program. It is sponsored by Sappi Fine Paper in Westbrook, Westbrook Kiwanis and Full Court Press.

Earning Eagle badges

Two Westbrook Boy Scouts and the grandson of a Westbrook woman received their Eagle Scout Award and badges recently by the Pine Tree Council in ceremonies at the Portland Lodge of Elks.

Johnathan Collins, Alex Emery, both of Westbrook’s Scout Troop 83, and Matthew Ward of Troop 433 in Winslow, grandson of Ann Ward of Westbrook, were among the 123 scouts presented the Eagle award.

For his Eagle Scout project, Collins worked 160 hours renovating the bathroom and a storage area at the Highland Lake Church. Collins enjoys snowboarding, kayaking and is captain of his school’s biking team.

Collins, who plans a career in the military, is the son of David and Julia Collins.

Emery made a kiosk sign, cleared a trail and did landscaping on the Frazier Trail. He put in over 220 hours on the project, earning his Eagle award.

Emery has been captain of his school’s cross-country and wrestling teams besides participating in outdoor track.

Emery hopes to attend the U.S. Naval Academy and become a pilot. He is the son of Lewis and Stephanie Emery.

Ward and his 30 volunteers designed and built three bridges for the Winslow High School cross-country team besides clearing brush, roots and branches along the trail. He worked 115 hours on the project, earning his Eagle award.

The son of William and Deborah Ward, he enjoys cross-country running, flying and skiing. His career interests include flying and architecture.

From the Portland Lodge of Elks, the Scouts received the Elks Eagle Scout Certificate and an American flag along with a shoulder patch.

At the banquet and award ceremonies, Maj. Gen. John W. Libby of the Maine Army National Guard, spoke on leadership. Congressman Mike Michaud also attended along with J.T. Dabbs, a scouting executive.

Old cemetery group to meet

Donna Conley, vice president of Maine Old Cemetery Association, said the Maine Old Cemetery Association (MOCA) is meeting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, at the Freeport Community Library, 10 Library Drive, Freeport.

“MOCA meetings are held 3 times a year and this is the only one this year in our area,” Conley said.

The meeting from 9 a.m. to noon is open to everyone with an interest in cemetery preservation; registration is $3 at the door. Helen A. Shaw will speak on the “Sociology of Cemeteries”. Bring a bag lunch and join in a tour of Freeport cemeteries at 1 p.m.
