Editor,

The Sebago Lake Region Chamber of Commerce recently asked the business members of the Chamber to support funding for the July 4th fireworks display this year after receiving a letter from Town Manager Derik Goodine who stated that the town is in need of funds to secure the event in 2006.

Understanding that tourism is the number one priority for many of the region’s businesses, the Chamber office has received numerous phone calls and e-mails from our members who want to work with Naples to preserve this very popular 4th of July event.

Residents and visitors from our region as well as surrounding regions flock to the Naples causeway to observe this historical event. Boaters enter Long Lake from as far away as Sebago Lake by traveling up the Songo River, across Brandy Pond, under the Causeway Bridge, into the Long Lake Basin to observe the ever-popular fireworks display. The Songo River Queen cruises Long Lake awaiting this grand event.

I am pleased to report that Bruce Plummer of P&K Sand and Gravel of Naples has donated $2,500 toward the fireworks, with a challenge to other businesses to match half of that amount. Richard Waltz of Richard P. Waltz Plumbing and Heating, Inc. of Windham, has matched this number with a $2,500 donation as well.

Dan Craffey of Moose Landing of Naples not only answered the challenge of half of the $2,500 but exceeded the amount with a $2,600 donation. This donation can also be addressed to other non-profit organizations, local residents and visitors to the area who would like to have Naples provide an outstanding fireworks display on the Fourth of July, 2006. Preserve history, preserve this event on this holiday for 2006 and the years to follow by sending along a donation also.

A sincere thank-you to those Chamber members who have donated and welcome visitors and seasonal residents to the Sebago Lakes Region to enjoy our many amenities of activities – boating, golfing, shopping, hiking, dining, camping, fishing and others too many to list. The Challenge is still on, until May 15, for local businesses to donate with a generous check made out to the Town of Naples, July 4th Activities, and sent to the Sebago Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 1015, Windham, ME. 04062.
