Bonny Eagle names accreditation steering committee

Bonny Eagle High School has named a steering committee to direct the school’s efforts during its accreditation by the Commission on Public Secondary Schools of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, said Kathy Campbell, a spokesman for SAD 6.

The committee will be co-chaired by Sue Orlowski, Ed Twilley, and Lyn Willison, who are teachers at Bonny Eagle.

The other members of the committee are Lynn Brown, Irene Marchenay, Dan Bennett, Lori Naplitano, Clarence Cormier, Brent Pettegrow, Kathy Field, Stan Sampson, Sheila Jepson, Peter Worthington, Leesa Joiner and Christine Wallace.

NEASC membership requires that a school undergo a self-study and formal evaluation at least once every ten years. The steering committee will coordinate a schedule for the self-study, collect reports from various subcommittees and make necessary preparations for the evaluation committee’s visit. The steering committee and co-chairs meet every Tuesday from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

NEASC is an organization of approximately 1,850 public schools, colleges, and universities. Of these, approximately 650 schools have been accredited through the association’s Commission on Public Secondary Schools.

Griffin is the son of David and Sandy Sherry of Buxton.

Sheila Jepson, principal of Bonny Eagle High School, announced the nomination, which places Griffin in the national competition. This spring, 150 national winners will be chosen to receive $1,000 college scholarships.

Principals in high schools throughout the country could nominate one of their student leaders. Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. They also were required to write an essay.

“Griffin Sherry was a clear choice for this award,” Jepson said. “His leadership as class president has been excellent. He has juggled his many responsibilities as class president in addition to being active in theatre, music and sports and maintaining a 3.38 grade point average. Griffin is well known by his classmates and is well spoken. I am thrilled to have Griffin as the recipient this year. He is undoubtedly a clear leader, not only as class president for the past four years, but also a leader in the classroom. He is a positive role model for students and school community.”
