Windham historians may have been surprised to find Province Fort incorrectly referred to as “Fort Sumner” in an article in last week’s paper entitled, “Parson Smith House: Past and Present.” Province Fort was erected, next to where the Parson Smith House still stands, in 1744. Its purpose was to protect settlers fearful of Native American tribes who fished the nearby Presumpscot River.
