The picture on the left shows the old Westbrook High School building that was built on Main Street in 1886.
In 1913, a three-story annex was added to this building giving the school an additional nine classrooms. A gymnasium and additional classrooms were added to the structure in 1936 on the Foster Street side.
When the present high school was built on Stroudwater Street, this old building became the Westbrook Junior High School and served as such until the present-day Wescott Junior High School was built on Bridge Street.
The three-story 1913 wing was demolished to make way for the post office. The Westbrook Recreation Department took over the gymnasium.
The main building remained empty for many years until the Westbrook Housing Authority took it and the adjacent building to the rear over and renovated both buildings into the Presumpscot Commons Elderly Housing.
