The Southern Maine EMS Council will present its second annual Children’s Health and Safety Fair at the Portland Expo on Wednesday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“The program is part of our emergency medical services for children program”, said John Leighton, coordinator for Southern Maine EMS. “We present numerous health, safety and educational displays geared toward children. Our aim is to present information to these children in a fun and exciting manner.”
Leighton said last year’s inaugural event had just over 400 students, preschool through second grade, tour the exhibits and take home a bag of educational materials.
“We have invited regional schools and daycare providers and encourage the general public to stop to enjoy and learn” Leighton said. There will be displays from the fire marshall, local fire and EMS departments, the Maine Warden Service, Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, Southern Maine Medical Center and a variety of other health programs. Also making appearances throughout the day will be Mercy Bear, Vince and Larry-the seat belt guys, Smokey Bear, along with some other of the area’s favorite mascots.
Southern Maine EMS is a non-profit agency located in South Portland that serves EMS and public safety agencies in York, Cumberland, Sagadahoc and parts of Oxford counties. For more information check the Web site at www.smems.org or call 741-2790.
