Would you pay to visit Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth?
Steve Cook, 40, Windham
“I haven’t been there since I was a kid. But I’d probably pay to go back. I’d pay up to $5 a visit.”
Sylvia Jensen, 71, Westbrook
“I’ve lived in this area all my life and I can’t see paying for something that has always been free of charge. They have the museum that charges, and they have the gift shop. They also have a venue that rents out to family get-togethers. Why do they need more money? My husband, Jim, was inducted into the Air Force at Fort Williams.”
Chris Parker, 42, Sebago
“No. I say donations, if anything. Everything we do now, we have to pay for. It’s getting ridiculous. The state of Maine is so desperate right now for money. Everyone is after something.”
Colleen Slaughter, 31, South Portland
“No. I feel quite sad about it, too. I have a 9-year-old son who is quite interested in history. We live closeby and we just wouldn’t be able to go. I just can’t afford it.”
Elizabeth Baker, 39, Otisfield
“No. It’s part of Maine. If they wanted to fix it up then I can see seeking donations for upkeep. But we shouldn’t have to pay to see a landmark in Maine. I have Girl Scouts and we only go to places free of charge. I wouldn’t take them there; it would cost me too much.”
Donald E. Strout, 33, Limington
“I’ve been going there since I was 8 years old. Cape Elizabeth, I feel, is a wealthy city and I don’t see why they have to charge. During the summer, my whole family goes there almost every Sunday after church. The forts never get old. But I definitely wouldn’t go as much if it cost money.”
