Veterans

Don Swander, president of the Windham Veterans Association, has announced planning meetings for the Nov. 11, 2006 Veterans Day celebration at the Windham Veterans Center have begun, and work will begin outside on April 29 and 30. Mark your calenders to attend on Veterans Day to see the additions and improvements made to the Veterans Memorial Park which honors all veterans from the greater Windham area. For more information or to donate time, money or ideas, please call the Vets Center at 892-5911 and leave a message. All calls will be appreciated and returned.

Library

Try to visit the Windham Public Library before May 5 to view the assortment of salt and pepper shakers from the collection of Vicki Clarke of Windham. More than a dozen pairs are exhibited in the case, including fun shakers in the shape of a burger and fries, a bowl of eggs and a measuring cup, and a Roy Rogers lunchbox and Thermos.

Hunter Safety

There is still space in the Hunter Safety Course being offered May 13 and 20 at the Windham Public Libary. The cost is $5 per person, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult, the youngest accepted is 10 years old. You must attend both sessions, which run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The course is conducted by Phil Guimond. For more information call Linda Morrell in the Town Clerk’s office at 892-1900.

State Convention

The Republican State Convention will be held May 5 and 6 at the Augusta Civic Center. Windham’s delegation will consist of: Gary Plummer, delegation chairman; Barbara Strout, Ralph Johnston, Tony and Marianne Oberly, Phyllis and Frank Koenig, Phyllis and Clark Smith, Jeff Pierce, Lani Kelly, Clayton Haskell, Donna and Richard Chapman, Linda Cohen, Gary Winship and Paul Quimper.

Dance

The “Melt Down” dance sponsored by four snowmobile clubs, (Lyman Snow Club, Sokokis Riders, Standish Sno-Seekers and Windham Drifters) will be held April 29. The cost is $12.50 per person; it will be held at the Roost in Standish. The DJ is Roger Grenier. For more information, call Brent Everett at 892-4023.

Historical Society

The Historical Society will be open May through November, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Regular monthly meetings are open to the public and are at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month. On Monday, April 24, the Society will meet at 7 p.m. at 234 Windham Center Road. The program by Lyle Merrifield, of Merrifield Farms, will showcase Maple Syrup making. The public is welcome.

Fund-raiser

The Parson Smith House Committee of the Windham Historical Society will hold a fundraiser April 29. There will be tours of the Parson Smith House located at 93 River Road from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., given by knowledgeable tour guides. The cost is $10 per person or $15 per family, the tours will be conducted in small groups of eight to 10. Refreshments will be available. You are asked to park on Anderson Road. This is a rare opportunity to see this historic 18th century mansion.
