Incumbent Buxton Selectman Cliff Emery is being challenged for his seat by Peter Burns.

Emery, chairman of the five-member Board of Selectman, took out his nomination papers on March 22, the first day they became available, but hadn’t returned them as of noon Tuesday. Burns, chairman of the town’s Budget Committee, took out his papers April 4 and filed them on April 12.

Voters will choose one candidate for a three-year term in the June election.

Buxton Town Clerk John Myers said two seats are available on the SAD 6 Board of Directors. Incumbent Sandra Plummer seeks reelection and has taken out papers. But Cynthia Hazelton, another incumbent, hadn’t taken out nomination papers by Tuesday. Buxton has four seats on the board.

Two three-year seats are available on the Planning Board and Richard Deister is the only candidate to take out papers. The incumbents for those two seats are Chris Baldinelli and Sue Schaller.

The Planning Board also has an opening for a two-year term. Barbara Elwell, who sits on the board now, is circulating her papers. Elwell was appointed by selectmen to the post to fill a vacancy.

Myers said no papers are out for the Personnel Review Committee that has two spots open this year for three-year terms. Wanda Emery is an incumbent while Jon Jewett, who was killed in a truck accident last year, held the other seat.

The Budget Committee, considered by many as a step towards selectman, is wide open. It has nine openings with four for three-year terms, two for two years, and three for one year. Lawrence has turned in his nomination papers for a three-year term on the committee.

Nomination papers are still available in the Town Clerk’s office. Each is required to have 25 valid signatures and the deadline for filing is 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 1.

Buxton will elect the towns’ office holders and school directors in on Tuesday, June 13, during the state’s primary election. In a referendum, voters in Buxton will also decide whether to accept the SAD 6 school budget. Myers expects a turnout of about 1,200 to 1,500. “I think it will be fair,” he said.

Myers said the annual town meeting would be on the following Saturday, June 17.
