Windham historians want to preserve the old Parson Smith homestead on River Road. One of the oldest homes in Windham, it stands today much as it did back in 1764. Owners Donald and Elaine Dickenson allowed the public to visit the homestead, but, with the house up for sale again, historians fear this valued landmark may be closed to the public under new ownership. They are asking for $30,000 out of town surplus to pay for a visitors center adjacent to the homestead. A public hearing will be held on Apr. 25 at Windham Town Hall to discuss the issue. If built, the Windham Historical Society plans to use this center, along with private donations and grants, to generate enough money to buy the homestead. Staff photo by Douglas Wright
