Get ready for bean-hole supper
Jan Labrecque, church secretary at United Church of Christ at North Gorham, has announced that their annual, authentic bean-hole bean suppers will be held the third Saturday of each month, beginning on May 20 and continuing through October.
The church, located at the corner of North Gorham and Standish Neck roads, will host three servings for each supper from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets will be $7; $3 for children under 10.
Church volunteers prepare 10 pounds each of pea, kidney and yellow eye beans. The beans are cooked in a large, brick and stone-lined oven in the ground. Their menu will include hot dogs, homemade salads, brown bread and pies.
The church has sponsored the bean-hole bean suppers for the past 10 years.
“In this age of fast food, microwaves and families that have a hard time finding the opportunity to sit down together for supper, it’s nice to know that there is still a place you can go to do that – and get the unbeatable taste of an old-fashioned Saturday night New England tradition,” Labrecque said.
Business & Civic Exchange annual election

The meeting will include the annual election of board members besides a motivational speaker, Miki Earle. Her topic will be “Get it Done” about the four D’s of success – desire, discipline, determination and delight.
Earle has owned several businesses and has held positions in corporate management and training. As a keynote speaker, Earle has traveled throughout North America.
All members and guests are invited and a light breakfast will be served at no cost. For reservations, call 892-5515 or visit www.gorhambusiness.org

Maine’s credit unions give $16,000 for hunger
Maine’s credit unions recently made history in the cause of ending hunger with their largest, single-day donation to one organization on behalf of the Maine Credit Unions’ “Campaign for Ending Hunger,” a contribution that brought the amount of funds distributed by Maine’s credit unions to $2 million since 1990.
Maine Credit Union League donated $16,000 in memory of JoAnn Pike, founder the Good Shepherd Food-Bank (GSFB). Pike founded the food bank nearly 27 years ago and served as it’s executive director. In March 2004, JoAnn Pike passed away from cancer. This is the third year that the Maine Credit Unions’ “Campaign for Ending Hunger” has made a contribution in her honor.
The Good Shepherd Food Bank is Maine’s only food bank and serves more than 95 percent of the hunger organizations in Maine.
“We are delighted that we can continue to keep JoAnn’s memory alive by making this donation in her honor. We are pleased that this donation honors JoAnn’s memory and is also historical at the same time,” said Jon Paradise, Governmental and Public Affairs Manager for the Maine Credit Union League.
