Manchester Elementary School celebrated their fourth annual Community Day last Wednesday, Mar. 29.

A culmination of year’s worth of work, the event was a celebration of the all-school project focused on helping the community both locally and around the world. Students learned to become responsible and involved citizens by participating in both classroom projects and school-wide ones.

This year’s school-wide theme was to help with Hurricane Katrina Relief. Kids raised more than $2,000 for hurricane relief and collected dog food for pet relief. Students also staged their own Mardi Gras parade to highlight the problems in New Orleans.

Some of the other charitable projects included collecting sneakers and sandals to send to Iraq, making homemade birdhouses to place around the Windham Community, collecting used books to send to schools that need to rebuild their libraries after the flooding due to the hurricanes and others.

This year’s keynote speaker was Cindy Williams from WCSH Channel 6. Parents were invited to attend and have lunch with their children. Checks were presented to the Harvest Hills Animal Shelter in Fryeburg and American Red Cross.
