A fire broke out in an unused structure at the Sappi mill yesterday afternoon and was eventually put out by the structure’s sprinkler system and Westbrook and Windham firefighters.

The fire began around 3:30 p.m. in the former pulp plant section of the mill in a structure scheduled for demolition and was over by 5:30.

Fire Chief Gary Littlefield said the fire was in a structure about 60 feet above the ground and required the help of a Windham ladder to attack the fire from two different angles, a common practice.

He said it only took about a half hour to put out. He said fire officials will look at it again tomorrow, but it didn’t appear the fire was intentional. He said the building still has electricity and heat still running through it.

While Westbrook firefighters were attending to the fire, firefighters from Windham, Falmouth, and Scarborough covered the city’s fire stations.
