Glen Googins and Michael Cyr each finished among the top four in his weight class to lead Scarborough Middle School at Saturday’s Eagle Wrestling Invitational in Windham.

Googins took third place in the 125-pound class, while Cyr was fourth among 115-pounders at the competition, which was attended by 10 teams and 180 wrestlers.

“The Scarborough kids are wrestling very hard,” said coach Pat Hughes. “We lost some close ones and we pulled some close ones out.”

In its first year as a sanctioned program, a dozen athletes are part of the Red Storm squad. Dylan LeComte, who wrestles at 130, said that the team is like a family.

“It’s a great sport,” he said. “All the kids are cheering you on, so it’s worth all the hard work.”

The seventh-grader added that wrestling has helped him concentrate better on and off the mat.

“We don’t have any one particular standout,” Hughes said. “We’re all on different levels, and we’ve trying to improve on an individual basis.”

The coach added that the Scarborough boosters have been strong supporters of the team.

“We wouldn’t have a middle school program without the boosters.”
